Why Do We Sell This Tamping Mat?

We particularly like the 90° angle at the front of the tamping mat. This supports the grip of the non-slip mat and closes a typical problem area—the front of the table or work surface. With classic tamping mats, the table is only protected from above. However, tamping is always done at the edge. This very quickly leads to many dents in the work surface.

What Makes Good Tamping?

"Tamping" refers to pressing the coffee grounds in the portafilter. By applying pressure of approximately 8-15 kg of weight, the coffee grounds in the portafilter are compressed.

For good tamping to be possible at all, the preparation of the grounds in the portafilter is crucial. If air bubbles are trapped or if coffee grounds are compressed more densely in some areas, the resistance of the coffee puck to water changes.

A good espresso extraction is made possible by uniform resistance. Lower resistance leads to faster water runoff and correspondingly uneven extraction. In the worst case, channeling occurs. In this channel formation, the brewing water runs off significantly faster in some areas and over-extraction takes place.
